Here’s what I know:
Your desire to create is important and special.
This is your heart calling.
Not everyone is called to create in this way. They have other calls.
Don’t worry. When you answer, your heart won't be asking you to make Art (capital "A"; noun).
That call would better come from a recruiter (or maybe a telemarketer posing as a recruiter). The choice to make Art—for sale—is a career choice, I think. A good path for some, and who knows, maybe you will make that choice someday—to be a professional Artist. But the heart isn’t really much interested in careers.
No, this call is your heart asking you to art (lowercase "a"; verb): to create without any other intention except to love doing it and to love what you make.
(Even if you’re new at this and you don’t yet believe you can make something you’ll love. Your heart knows better.)
To art is to experience your own creativity—your Self.
To invent, play, and express… and to follow insatiable curiosity. What can I make? What can I learn? Who am I?
To wildly smear paint across a page with apparent disorder—or precisely glue small papers into a careful image. To layer colors and lines and shapes in total abandon—or create a detailedl composition that speaks…clearly.
The heart wants what the heart wants.
The more you honor the call—and keep answering the call—the more you experience and learn…not only how to create with different tools and mediums…but who you are from the inside out.
And the more you want to live your life from THAT place.
And by the way…
Just in case there’s another voice shouting over your heart like this is a party line, creating a lot of static with words like: “You can’t do it! You’ll fail! Ignore this call! You’re too busy! There more important things…”
Behind the static, your heart knows better.
